One Pound UK doubled die

Here is a recent acquisition that was exciting to finally examine.

This is the first actual "doubled die" on a U.K. coin I have come across worthy of mention.

It is One Pound in denomination, dated 1998, and features the "Forth Rail Bridge" on the reverse which is located west of Edinburgh, Scotland and connects N. Queensferry to S. Queensferry . The outer design near the rim on the reverse is a depiction of a railway line.

ONE POUND, The base of the bridge supporting columns, catalivers and and the entire railway line near the rim appear to all be doubled die. The reverse appears to have a sizable mis-alignment as well.

The coin weighs 9.50 grams, (normal), and the edge has the milled and inscribed design that should be there. The striking dies seem to have been worn.

Thought everyone would like to see it, (as I am very happy with it).

I've got to ask a couple of questions. First, do you know if this die is made from the single squeeze hubbing process? Second, not being familiar with the one pound coin's design elements, do you have a picture of one without the doubled die? It would be very interesting to see the extent of the doubling on this great piece.

No normally struck coin of this type on hand at the moment. Some research has shown there are two edge patterns that were struck. The one on this coin is good to go and is the strongest sign of authenticity yet. The reeding is crisp and the pattern inscribed along the edge is clearly good.

Of comfort as well are die cracks, which is a comfortable association with worn dies. The obverse face was also struck with worn dies.

I do not know if this die is made from the single squeeze hubbing process.
