I believe this could be an RPM…does anyone have an opinion whether or not it could be? The photos are from a LDS 82D Kennedy Half Dollar. There are no CONECA listings for an 82D.

Off hand I would say that it is not a repunched mint mark. The ridge that was formed under the "D" has metal flow lines through it, which do continue into the field. This general indicates that the anomaly happened after the initial strike and is more than likely a form of machine damage doubling. However, others may have a different take on what has happened here.

It looks like die wear to me, although I can't rule out an impression from the shoulder of the mintmark punch. It doesn't look like machine doubling to me.

Mike - the reason that I thoght machine damage was that the top of the mint mark has been scraped, as if it was bounced back into the retreating die. Either way though, it is not a RPM.

Thank you guys for the comments. It is always easier to figure out these things with the coin in hand. I think Jeff is correct when he said there appears to be machine damage on the top of the mint mark, but I don’t think that is the case at the bottom, has Mike said. Jose’ Cortez suggested to me that some sanding on the die may have occurred around the mint mark area leaving a remnant of a secondary D. That would support this being an RPM, but most likely too minor. Any thoughts?

This is one I will need to see first hand. It could go either way.
