It's a broadstrike. They're not very often found in pocket change.

what causes the copper color to come off in places like the back of this one?

The thin copper plating split under tensile stresses generated by the strike, exposing the zinc core.

Your first pictures looked like it may have been a second strike involved, however, the clearer pictures shows just one strike.
