Hi everyone,

query on ow to distinguished a clad from a silver ike dollar? Is there a possibility that my Ike is a silver coin. The reeded edges has a two tone color half is brown and the other is the original metal color. I made an experiment and on the metal sound of this Ike with my 1902 Silver mexican peso and my 1907 Filipinas silver coin US mint San Francisco and their sound seems to resemble to eac other. Thanks

Don't laugh, this is from Ken Potter's book and even though I have not tried it myself, I am sure Ken wouldn't put something in his book that did not work

Simply put a white tissue over the coin in question and apply a light over the top of it. The silver or partial silver coin will appear white, while the non-silver will be a grayish brown.

Also, your Ike dollar should weigh in at 22.68 gr. If that weight is off, you may want to send it to an error expert for further examination.

I've tried the "kleenex test" and found it unreliable. If you have two BU coins -- one clad and one silver -- then the test seems to work. However, toning will mess up your results. Also, the test does not work through slabs.
