could someone tell me what terminology would be used to describe this error? Is it very common?

Hi Mary,
All of that doubling looks like mechanical doubling. Pretty common actually, even of proof coinage.

You almost had me on the 1969-S cent until I realized that I was seeing a reflection of the 6 digit of the plastic that you are shooting through. Yes, I do agree with Bob; it is machine doubling which is fairly common in that year.
