  • Curious About this 2000P 1C Neck

Looking at this 2000P 1C neck something just dosen't look right. Not sure if the beard on the neck is doubled or what it is. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

Now that's interesting. I've never seen this before.

      Hi Guys,

I thought this one was interesting also so I took a look at one of the 2000's lying around and the neck hair detail (location) looks the same as mine but just more pronounced on yours. So I'm thinking it's just from polishing the die. Hope you don't mind me giving my opinion on this one.

So far in the bag of cents I am looking through, the vast majority of the 2000P's have this accented beard on the neck. I have also found some 2000 D's that have it. So not sure if this just happened to be on the master die's or if it is just the way they designed it for that year.

          Hi Digenes,

I can't say why it is but, I know just from researching coins that starting in 2000, the beard, lips and mole are much more pronounced. I noticed it on the lips and mole at first and then realized that their all like that. I live in the N.W. so I pretty much only see D mint coins. I don't know if all mint dies are like this but have just accepted the change. I've since looked closer at the neck hair on the 2000's and still feel it's a die polishing effect. Given, it really stands out on your example.

For some reason, the obverse design of Lincoln was changed for that year. So, all 2000 Lincoln cents had the same features during that year and only that year. In 2001, the MINT reverted back to the Lincoln bust design of 1999.

As to the coin posted, it appears that the die was polished at one time and some of the design features were lost in the throat area giving it the strange appearance.
