I assume you're referring to the blemish over the bison's back. It looks to be some kind of die damage, perhaps a die dent or accidental die abrasion. As far as it being a new variety, that depends on how you define "die variety". I exclude die damage while others include it. Everybody's got a different definition.

Looks like someone ground to much on these coins. There are many grinding marks within that blemished area. Pretty significant area involved big as that "D" in UNITED. Looks like a sharks fin on the back of a Buffalo.:)
