  • 1944 Nickels

I noticed the 1944 nickels were slightly different than the other nickles in a collection of war nickels. But because they are on nickels from all three mints, I wonder if it is just a peculiarity with the 44?
1st, the 'T's have extra points,
2nd, the R are slightly different in Liberty
3rd, the B has the same variation the Rs do.
4th, there are splits at the end of some of the letters

    See Pictures below.

That just looks like a solid double die. I don't have others near me for comparison. I am not very well versed in these nickels to be able to tell you what double die this is, I doubt being that old that it is a new found die but it is nice

This is master die doubling. ALL 1944 nickels have this doubling. And by the way, it is doubled die, not double die.

Thanks for the clarification; I thought it unusual to be on P's D's and S's. You make a clarification that it is a doubled die rather than a double die. Please - what is the distinction?

There is no such thing as a "double die". It's always "doubled die".

Often you will see this term "double die" used on EBay auctions that are not a true doubled die. However, the seller uses this term to make the unwary and those who are not educated in variety dies think that they are bidding on something special. More often than not, it is die deterioration doubling or machine doubling that the auction item has and not a doubled die.
