Is the space between A and M variable or is there a set space size for the Wide AM 98, 99, 2000? I have never found one, but I have seen some which have a minimal space which comes and goes as the coin is shifted through 360 degrees. Thanks

The spacing between letters can increase as the letters become thinner as the result of intentional die abrasion. The spacing between letters can decrease as the letters thicken due to die deterioration.

Thanks for your prompt reply. So does it matter how large the space is between A and M in the wide AM so long as the two do not touch?

I have not studied the "wide AM" and "close AM" variants to any great extent. It would be best to wait for one of our die variety experts to answer your question.

There is a definite difference between the wide AM and the closed AM. Your best bet is to look at an proof Lincoln cent from 1993 on and compare it with any business strike Lincoln cent from 1993 on. Also, compare the designer's initials for the difference between the business strike and the proof strike.
Both "Variety Vista" and "Lincoln Cent Resources" have good comparison photographs that will help you attribute your coins.
