You don't see too many shattered dies on recent U.S. coins:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140145115216

It features a 50% retained cud with significant vertical displacement and horizontal offset, along with three bi-level die cracks. Together these constitute a shattered die. This coin was featured in my recent Errorscope article on shattered dies.

This is now the fifth dime I've seen struck by this shattered obverse die, and they all look identical. Evidently, despite its desperate-looking condition, it was capable of striking a number of coins without further disintegration. I still don't know if the obverse die was the hammer die or the anvil die; both setups were used during this time period.

It sure would be interesting to see a few of these side by side:-) It would also be interesting to imagine what a coin would have looked like right after this die fell apart all together:-)

Thanks,
Bill
