I just recently purchased a coin lot on eBay which included this IHC. Not sure of the date since the 3rd number is missing. It looks like multi mint errors to me but, I'm not the expert. Anyone have any idea what is going on with this coin? I'm anxious to know if I have something unusual and worth over face value (I hope!) :), or is it merely a very damaged coin. I haven't been able to figure it out. There does seem to be some sort of device imprints in the areas that are flattened. The area over a portion of the date is raised as well as the rim area over the "TE" in STATES. I can't imagine that a coin in this condition would still be around for all these years.
Thank you!

This coin was damaged outside the mint.

Thanks for your quick reply, Mike. One thing that I noticed on the coin and forgot to mention is that the last feather on the headdress is between the C & A in AMERICA. I'm wondering how this could be since the last number in the date is 0 and the 1886 Type 2 is the only IHC with feather in that position, isn't it?

Actually, all IHP from mid 1886 to 1909 had the last feater pointing to the space between the C and A of AMERICA. Since this coin shows a portion of the 8, the only possible date for this coin is 1890.

Duh! :D I have several IHC within the dates you mentioned and I never noticed the position of the feather being between the C & A as in the 1886. And I just checked out some of them. I must have only checked the ones with earlier dates. Thank you very much for help, BJ. Have a good evening.
