I had this 2004-P FL quarter come in for attribution as a possible doubled die. I am confident it is not a doubled die. It looks like a small die chip, but it has a circular appearance reminesent of the Lincoln cent with a circle gouge on the center reverse. Any opinion?

James - I agree that this is not a doubled die. We can apply the same princples that were used with determing that the Wisconsin "extra leaves" were not doubled dies; the die tilt would have to be to great to achieve that type impression. However, I would be more inclined to call it a die gouge rather than a die chip.
I do have the die anomaly that shows the partial circle on the reverse of the 2004 Lincoln cent and I also have this one on a 1988 Lincoln cent that is EDS coin.

There is also a small "strike through" area that shows up on the picture to the left of the circle.
Comparing the three, the only similarity that I see is that they all appear in the center of the die. Also (do I hate saying this), there is some sembalance to the "extra leaves".

I also agree that it does not appear to be a doubled die. Also, It does not appear to be as circular as the mark on the cent so It does not appear to me to be related. Because the surface of the "blob" seems to be irregular, it would indicate to me that the damage to the die might not be a gouge. I lean more toward a die chip.

Looks like an indeterminate form of die damage to me.

BJ, thanks for posting that Lincoln. I haven't seen it before. Beautiful circle.
