What is up with this 1932 Quarter, DDO-001?

I am more than sure that this 1932 Washington quarter is the DDO-001. It is in AU condition and in a LDS.

It does show a nice division line on the ear lobe, however, the que is just to weak to show any doubling.

My problem is with Washington's nostril. Although it also shows nice doubling, there is an added feature, indicated by the white arrow, that does not show on other photos that I have seen of this variety.

Any ideas to what this is, or is it part of the doubled die?

James; It may very well be, however, it connects well with the doubling seen on the flare of the nostril, that is what makes it so odd. I am almost 99 % sure that it occurred in the mint and was not an after mint addition.

My issue with the coin is that it was so harshly cleaned as evidenced by the pictures. Theres no telling how much metal was moved around in the process of the cleaning. It really was harsh.

All the scratches would make the coin pretty tough to attribute.
That being said, the ear and the nostril do resemble what you would see on Coneca I-O-IV (FS-25-1932-101)

Unfortunately, even if it turns out to be one, that polishing murdered it.

Bill - You are correct, it has been harshly cleaned. Interestingly enough, it was verbally grade at the last winter FUN show, by a second tier grading company, as AU-58. Makes you stop and wonder what these guys are up to; say one thing and then when you do submit it, it comes back in a body bag as being cleaned, but they now have your fee in hand.

Well anyway, thanks for your input Bill. It will be put away, in the dark recesses of a 2 X 2 box, for I just can not bring myself to put it into the scrap silver pile, YET.

That is quite an interesting mark on that nostril, BJ. It lines up with the doubling well, but it appears to be distinct. It would be interesting to compare it against other examples of the variety to see if that mark shows up again.

I definitely wouldn't put it in the scrap pile. The earlobe still has the right characteristics of the DDO coin. The extra little "snot" on the nose near the nostril is not normal for the DDO but the nostril looks OK to be the DDO as well. I am just reluctant to give it a thumbs up 100%. I am at about 60% sure it could , maybe, possibly be one:-) How's that for fudging:-) ?
