CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

Trail Die?

    Trail Die?

    This is from a 1957 Roosevelt Dime.

    Would this be a Trail Die? I don’t think I can see a difference between a trail die and flow lines from a fatigued die. What is a trail Die?

    Those lines are produce by cold metal flow over the die surface and this action is refereed to as die deterioration. Most of the time die deterioration lines are radial in direction while trail lines are parallel.

    There have been examples of trail lines being enhanced by die deterioration, but so far that has bee encountered only on Lincoln cents.

    As for your coin, the lines coming from the bottom of the letters in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST follow the same direction as the flow lines above the same motto. This also holds true for the date; the flow lines are in the same direction both above, in and below the date.

    Interesting coin though and if it were minted after 1980, I would factor in the possibility of it being trail lines enhance by die deterioration.
