CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    1983 D Lincoln Cent DDO FS-101 or Die Chip?

    Greetings everyone,

    I am looking for opinions on this 1983 D Lincoln Cent that either has a well placed die chip or is possibly a different die state of the FS-101.
    Here are some general points to keep in mind:
    • I was unable to find any of the die markers for the FS-101 in MDS. I checked both Copper Coins and Variety Vista for PUPs.
    • Based on the number of light angles where something shows up visually, I believe there is something by Lincoln's ear.
    • I'm leaning towards not FS-101 or other DDO based in part on the shape of the E in WE.
    • I'm happy to provide more photos if requested.

    I am biased when it comes to ear, eye and column doubled dies.
    Not found of them and dont collect or look for them. Just not my cup o' Tea.

      To me this looks more like a well placed hit to the planchet that has worn over time to look more rounded. I don't like the sharp inner curve in the first photo. The third photo I can see the hit at the very top. I would lean more to PMD. Sorry Pete

      One other comment on this topic - when it comes to Double Dies on Cent denomination with mintmarks, also include a photo of the Date/Mintmark. The date mintmark location will always be the exact same if it's the very same die. This does not move or wear. An overlay can make it very easy to see if it's FS-101 - the date mintmark position is the same.

        Now that you mention it, that sharp curve does look suspiciously like PMD.

        One other comment on this topic - when it comes to Double Dies on Cent denomination with mintmarks, also include a photo of the Date/Mintmark. The date mintmark location will always be the exact same if it's the very same die. This does not move or wear. An overlay can make it very easy to see if it's FS-101 - the date mintmark position is the same.
        I will keep that in mind for future posts! I will also do an overlay of my cent to the FS-101 and see where the MM lands. If it's dead on, I'll post more photos to this thread. Otherwise, Thank you everyone who took a look or shared an opinion!

I'm submitting; a close up of the mint mark for my coin, the VV picture, a picture showing the mint mark location related the the neighboring letters and attaching the link to the related VV page.               Thank you for the suggestion and example how to! I've been using Inkscape, a free program, on my MAC/PC to do overlays. It's a lot like Photoshop.

              I did an overlay of my coin with the FS-101 and they did not line up. Thanks again everyone!
