  • Richmond coin show - a beautiful 1880 carson city with a possible 8/7 and a Dash.

There was a visitor of the coin show that brought in a VERY nice 1880 CC Morgan dollar in a GSA holder that could easily tickle a grade of MS-65. His question was, it appeared to have a "7" under the 8 and he has a piece of paper that stated such that looked like authentic GSA printed material identifying the possibility of this coin having a 8 over 7.

I placed it under the scope and fiddled with the light and was able to get this shot. It looks like a potential to be a "low 7", and even has the Dash under the "8". He was reluctant to say how much his father paid for it, so I can imagine that it was bought at the GSA auctions. I told him the VAM world supplement which lists sales of VAMS lists the Dash above 750 or so for a decent graded 1880 CC with this issue.

It WAS Halloween weekend, so maybe this is just a freakish polishing line, but that looks like a deformed "7" to me, with a Dash.

Here's a photo of the CC
