Now that Mike Diamond's article is out in ErrorScope, I though I'd post the color photos here. This is the same coin as seen on pages 28-31 in the current issue of Errorscope.

It did a number on the incused designer initials... SS became SS SS. The photo above compares this coin (left) with a coin with moderate MD (center) and with a Sac dollar with no MD (right).

If you are interested in reading the debate as to whether this coin was double struck or simply extreme mechanical doubling, here is the link to the coppercoins post...

Thanks for doing the article Mike. It was great -- and the photos turned out much better than the CW article -- as you said they would. I still have not attempted to have it slabbed as double struck. I've been waiting to see if any more turned up. I figure that if it did turn out to be MD, many more would have been cranked out with a similar degree of doubling (just as I saw with Kansas quarters). As extreme as this is, they'd have turned up on eBay by now if they exist in quantity. I've been watching, and as far as I know, this one is unique.

Oddly enough, NGC has been slabbing proof Presidential dollars as double-struck, when they are clearly not.

I just read where another 2007 P "Satin Finish" double struck dollar was found - this time on a Madison dollar from a U.S. Mint Set. Here is a link to the article...

I find it interesting that as rare as these are, there are definite similarities between this new discovery and the 2007 P SMS Sac dollar above. Both involved only a slight rotation, both were double struck in collar (no partial Collar), both were Satin Finish "Mint Set" coins and both from Philly.

Besides being a completely different design, the only major difference is the the 2nd strike on the Madison dollar appears to be a regular (heavy) strike, flattening out much of the design from the initial strike.

Yes, they are very similar. I like yours better, Ken, since it incorporates two errors, a double-strike with rotation and a weak second strike. I don't know if the market would agree, but I realize that's not a big concern of yours.
