CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • Canada 1978 Ni Dollar Major Doubled Die Reverse

This 1978 Nickel Dollar Doubled Die represents the one and only major DD known for this first year of the Single-Squeeze "Restrained Hubbing" process implemented in Canada. Reported by Steve Olter of Michigan in April 2009 this one was featured in my World Coin News column, Visiting Varieties.

Olter had asked what I though of the raised area found on the reverse Voyageur design. The area in question is found on the island fairly well centered between the Indian and fur trader that the Mint refers to a “voyageur.” At first glance it was clear that it did not exhibit the usual characteristics of a die dent, die gouge or die break. It was smooth and rounded as if it has been hubbed there as a part of the design. Since it certainly did not belong there and had to be a displaced area of “extra design” from an early hubbing I determined that it was just a matter of examining the coin to find out were the point of origin of the secondary design was. In short order I found the most probable answer. The extra design appears to fit well within the confines and shape of the lowermost left branch of the left evergreen tree.

The blue arrow points to the place of origin of the doubling and the red arrow at the displaced area of the tree.

You sure that isn't an Asian Carp jumping into the boat? How did that get displaced so far and nothing else was displaced?

      Jim,

This is a Titled Hub doubled die. The same cause of all the Minn. Quaters with the totally separated "Extra Tree" and the same as the Homestead quarters. Same as all the Titled Hub Canada 1974 Extra Yoke nickel dollars.

Ken, I am still looking for one of these for my collection... this one is proving to be quite elusive.

The sad part is that Steve Olter put it in an auction without telling me and it sold for way under what I would have paid him! Oh well!
