I'm posting a larger photo. Would the line between the numbers in the date be considered a strike-though error of something like a staple instead of a die chip? Thank you for sharing your experience and expertise.

In my opinion, it's not going to be a strike through like a staple. That more than likely would be incused (sunk) into the coin. Staples tend to be erractic in shape.
It could be the start of a die crack. I see a portion on the right side of the 1, right mid part of the 9 and right upper part of first 4.
It could be a die gouge. Which also makes sense, since a gouge on the working die will be raised on a coin.
Check the reverse of the coin in the same general area, although it may be a long shot, look for any signs of a die clash.Gary Kozera
