1969s proof-ddd and machine doubling?
Hello, I'm new to collecting and trying to figure out the differences between the double dies and machine doubling. I am appreciative of all of the great information in this forum and other sites, and think I'm finally getting a grasp of it and the differences. My first thought was a double strike, because of the notching in the letters at the base "T" and "N", and the odd notching in the center of "E" and "R", however the Lincoln bust and Liberty do not exhibit this characteristic. Is this just odd localized and unfortunately worthless machine doubling?

In my opinion, proof coins are commonly struck more than once.
This is done to highlight the design and make it more appealing to collectors. If the planchet shifts ever so slightly, these conditions might show up. I typically mention to people, visit the variety websites and see if there were any sightings for that year, mintmark or type coin (proof or business strike). Most coin reference sites will add a designation like PR to the listing.
Variety vista is listed here:

Does your coin have machine doubling? It probably does since the second ( or more strikes) were slightly off, and since it was not aligned perfectly, sheered off a little..
I typically use high magnification only to confirm what I have found. Typically I stay between 10 to 40x. The attributors stick closer to 10x. If it requires more than 10x to see, then the attributor may consider it too minor.Last edited by MintErrors; 05-17-2024, 04:38 AM.Gary Kozera

Three web sites that are very helpful in identifying varieties, errors and worthless doubling are
https://doubleddie.com . Especially under the worthless doubling article.
https://www.error-ref.com/index-of-entries/ this website list a lot of issues with coins, some good, some not so good.
I have some articles on my website which might be helpful. My site is listed in my signature.Last edited by MintErrors; 05-17-2024, 04:39 AM.Gary Kozera

That makes a lot of sense, and is kind of what I thought had happened. I appreciate the response and site suggestions. I’ve been on your site and doubleddie and found them both to be very informative. I will definitely be checking out the other one you suggested. Thanks
