    MPD on an 1886 5c?

Looking down the right edge of the numeral 1, what do you see sticking out towards the first 8? It is definitely raised metal, but I can't tell if this is an MPD or really just the result of a die gouge. The metal seems too well-formed in shape, that is to say it's not blob-y like most gouges, and I want to believe it's the base of an errant 1. But then again, wishing doesn't make it so. Thoughts? Thanks!

In my opinion, if your talking that piece sticking to the center right side, it might just be a small fragment. I personally don't believe it to be another flag of the 1, nor the foot of the one.

If you look around the date in the flat field area, you'll see more of the odd shaped fragments. This one just stuck somewhere to make it look interesting.

You could attempt an overlay of just the date, to see how crazy the potential single or multiple digits would look like.

Varietyvista.com does not have liberty nickels listed. If I can find the time to break out some books to see if any MPDs were discovered I will let you know.

Nothing found in one Shield/Liberty nickel reference that relates to the 1 in the date. Two exist for 1886:

First 1886 variety: 2nd 8 punched left, final punch right.

Second 1886 variety: Last 6 punched to south, corrected north.

      Happy hunting.
