  • Dropped number on Presidential dollar edge?

I found an interesting edge variation on a J. Quincy Presidential dollar in a roll from the mint.

(Be sure to click on the thumb nail for a better veiw)

The number '8' of the date 2008 is repeated and its orientation is at an angle. The extra 8 is not incuse, but is instead raised.

This could be post-strike damage from another edge inscribed planchet, but when either face of the coin is viewed there is no damage along the rim indicating any 'pushed up' metal. I see no damage.

The zone where the extra 8 is located does reflect an abnormal depression in the coin metal.

I haven't read or seen anything lately mentioning single dropped numbers or letters on these Presidential dollars, but I suppose it is possible.

    Thanks

Hi Jeff. I'm logging in from my host's computer. The raised "8" is indeed a contact mark from the edge of another coin. I see this kind of damage all the time. The soft, pure copper core takes an impression easily.
