CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

    1868-S 50C MPD

While slowly continuing my quest to attribute and identify potential varieties in my collection, I came across a wonderful (new to me) reference for die varieties of seated halfs - Bill Bugert's multi-volume set Register of Liberty Seated Half Dollar Varieties. This 68-S is on p.141 of Volume 1, describing die varieties of San Francisco half dollars from 1855 to 1878. It's conveniently browsable on the Internet Archive (https://archive.org/details/LSHDVol1/page/n143/mode/2up) or downloadable on the LSCC for gratis use (http://old.lsccweb.org/BillBugertBooks.php).

Variety attribution is still very new to me but this seems like a pretty minor MPD?

On my example, the errant 8 is the only one I can see of the 68 identified in the register, but that and the small lump in the rock base under the lower edge of the ribbon I believe ID it as a WB-4 MPD. I found a few other photo examples online of WB-4s but none clearly show any part of a 6, or at least anything I would identify as a 6? Either way, cool additional variety info to add to my archive and a fabulous resource to use for my other seated halfs - thanks Bill!

    great reference set no doubt.

the mpd is minor for the series only really cuz there are so many other strong and wild ones!!

id say it is a little more desireablr cuz the quality of half u half (lol?) there. from the images it looks like gradable with a very nice gunmetal grey look.
