CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    1982d HOT LIPS NICKEL

    I've never heard of a doubled "hot lips" die nickel. I have 2 of the dime varieties but never a nickel. What is y'all's input?

    In my opinion, this is localized machine damage. It looks like the mostril area suffers the same fate. So does the inner back area of Jefferson's mouth. Research is everything. Varietyvista does not list any doubled dies...usually if there are no documented examples listed there not going to be any new ones listed.

    I will also add that the magnification is way up there. It's such a small area. The overpowering magnification of the overseas made microscopes isthe only beef with them. It can make the very minor issue look extremely large and dramatic. Seaoned collectors typically used a 10 to 15x power loupe.

    There was only one hot lips coin, and that was a Morgan dollar.
