1964-P Lincoln Memorial - a mystery to me...

Okay last one tonight... (Saved the best for last?)

I simply cannot imagine how this happened - so I'm turning to you guys for ideas.

- There is an anomalous double-strike(?) of "IBER" across Lincoln's shoulder. In fact it almost appears as though the whole of the obverse was struck, then spun around and struck again, but lightly. You can see Lincolns jacket outline clearly.

- There is some evidence of some sort of doubling on both the obverse and reverse at the same time.

- The reverse shows the same type of double-strike as the obverse.

Anyone know what the heck happened to this cent?

How about a whole-coin shot of each face?

There are a lot of obverse-only counterfeit second strikes on 1964 cents. This may be one of them.

I have these... wasn't sure how many pictures I should post for it last night. Unfortunately with the lens I was using at the time it was impossible to get the whole coin in one shot. I can take full coin shots today if these aren't enough to ID it. I thought about the possibility of it being counterfeit - think I read it was a possibility. Didn't that guy (those guys?) do time for that? Think it would have to have been a test piece or screwup piece if it is.

These photos will do. It does appear to be a weak impression from a counterfeit die. The absence of any other "first-strike" design elements is a definite red flag.

Thanks yet again Mike. Guess deep down inside I wanted it to be mint made... but knew it was probably counterfeit. Not like I paid anything for it, so no harm there... still an interesting piece to me.

Here are a couple of full coin shots - just to have. I took them at a severe angle to try to bring out the weaker elements. Worked okay on the obverse, not so much on the reverse.

Yeah, it's a counterfeit second strike. Most of them show the amount and direction of rotation seen on your coin.
