CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

RPM or DDO question ? HELP US help you.

In my opinion, when the season collector attempts to help with YOUR question, it eats up time. There are PLENTY of questions posted each day. VERY little of them add amplifying info.... Hours can be spent doing things which the original poster could do themselves.

I am not ponting fingers, so please dont take this personally. The following recommendations apply to EVERYONE.

I too am guilty of not doing the following things on occasion.
    1. In the topic subject line, provide the year and mintmark along with the possible RPM or DDO number. Tell us the website where you found the match.
    2. See how the photo below centers on the date and mintmark ? Its vital to have a close up like this. It is right on, so if we have a photo like this, its way easier to eyeball where the mintmark was placed (more info later). The size of the photo is 1200x900 pixels, centered on the date and mintmark.
    3. https://board.conecaonline.org/filed...0&d=1738036228
    4. Provide the link to where the documented coin is. If you seen a similar looking one on conecaonline.info, varietyvista, doubleddie or copper coins, see if you can copy the link from the page to your post. It saves precious time.
Mint marks prior to 1989 were hammered by hand into each working die. This means, each mintmark tends to be placed in a slightly different location on each working die. So, when these working dies make coins, the location of the mintmark on the coin can differ slightly from the hundreds of working dies the mint uses.

You can get a general idea of this by visiting varietyvista.com and going to say, the 1960 D RPM listings. Each photo there may show enough of the date and mintmark to give you a look at how different each mintmark location can be.

Lastly, some of the documented examples will show spefic areas on the coin with give pick up points (pups) or commonly called markers. It can help identify the age of the die and help cement the attribution. Items like scratches, die gouges, die chips, die cracks and other items at the SAME location and direction can help a lot. Some websites will use arrows to help identify what they are trying to show.

Any extra effort truly helps cut down on the time spent helping others.

To sticky this. It can only cut down on precious time that the seasoned, veteran collectors spend on helping others who may not understand how to help.
