CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

    1958 10C PR and 1958-D 10C - Same Obverse Die?

    Hello, lovely folks!

Were these two coins struck by the same die? They’re a 1958 proof dime and 1958-D circulating strike I found unequivocally similar so as to completely confound coincidence. Attached are comparison photos including drawing highlighting the similarities and just the highlights themselves. I think this example, unlike what I posted earlier (a different coin than this one), does not share the same obscuring machine damage. I have endeavoured to be specific in my illustration, pardon my shaking hand!

I am completely ignorant as to the process of behind-the-scenes die production and will not claim to be anything but. I just love to learn and am going where what I see takes me! If I was to speculate, I would hypothesize that the die was originally a 1958 proof die that was then sent to the Denver mint where it was used to mint circulating coins.

The hangnail where the top curve of the R in TRUST returns to meet the stem is just so distinctive to me, from all the Roosevelt dime die varieties I've seen and cherrypicked for. The only time I ever saw this was on 1958 DDO-001 (CONECA/VAR.VISTA).

This time I wanted to ask a more specific question. Is there any way these two coins could look this similar in all these ways at the same time without being struck from the same die? I got a real bee in my bonnet about this one, and I would love to understand how anything else could be this so consistently exact!

    Much love, y'all!

    -Ryan

From the photos, I say that they do resemble each other, however, there is a lot of die degradation going on as well. I am no expert and the next person may know the the correct answer. I find when I'm looking at a coin thats been around, it's hard to tell

In my opinion, they do not ship to another facility and reuse proof dies.
You would have to have compelling evidence to convince people the Denver coin was struck by another proof working die from Philadelphia. Things like exactly the same die markers in the same exact area and exact same direction would be required.

Personally, I am not into hypothethical situations, so I will pass on future comments or posts like this from anyone.

This is why it so important to know the minting process.
There are some decent references out there especially Arnold Margolis for
        U S coins minted prior to 1996.
