  • 1957 penny

    Hello all,

Since my last post I snagged a 1983 Brass Plate Strike, I saw it in the clerks hand B\4 they even gave it to me, I was like "that does'nt look right". Sure looks right at home thought...

My current question is concerning a 1957 penny.

    Liberty ussually looks like "L l B E R T Y" right?

But the one I have is

    "L l B lE R T Y"

There is another character between the B and the E of liberty (actually it's attatched and parralell, to the Left vertical side of the "E") , it's about 3\4 as tall as the rest and in the same shape as the "l". Reminds me of the DDR found on the 2000 - 2005 (?), that is an extra column to the Left or Right of Lincolns statue, just way bigger.

I wish I had the ability to get a Pic of this to you, my friend may be able to help me with that, I'll explore.

Is this common as I have found 2 of them, my friend has the other one, not sure if it's the same year. They both are from the 50's. From what I can tell the die was made with the extra character

    Happy Hunting

You've got a die chip between the B and the E. Exceedingly common.

      Thanks Mike,

This bring to focus my need for a good book on the minting coins to better understand the whole process.

        Hi Scott,
I am not an expert in Lincolns, but I can tell you that what you have probably found is the famous 'B I E' error frequently found on the 55-57 Lincolns. The 'I' you are seeing is a die-break between the B and E. Some of these can be quite difficult to see, and some are very impressive in their appearance. Although these errors do not usually carry premium, it is still exciting to find them and add to your error collection.
