In my opinion, i cannot tell what exactlly is going on from those photos. I do have a link in my signature block that offers a way to take better photos with a cellphone. The full obverse and reverse can be done that way.
As for the close up photo, it appears the photo is of a monitor. That usually makes the photo heavily pixelated and flat looking.
Notice how much nicer the reverse is compared to the obverse. This to me means this coin could have been obverse down on pavement, concrete or otherwise.
This does not have the appearance of a broken die. There appears to be damage to the northern and western side of IN, which may be the true culprit. All these letters are is raised metal on a planchet. It really does not take much effort to make some of the devices to go away.Last edited by MintErrors; 04-16-2026, 04:06 PM.

In any event, a good clear photo of the full obverse and reverse would make assessing the coin a lot easier.

In my opinion, I believe it is post mint damage (PMD) after it left the mint. The overall condition of the coin suggests heavy use and plenty of issues on the obverse. Once a coin goes into circulation its subject to all sorts of abuse, intentional and unintentional.
If you want a CONECA staff member to look at this coin, place a post under CONECA Services => Examinations.
