CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

Is this an RPM?

    Is this an RPM?

    I got into the old coin box today to check something out and decided to go over a few coins with a loop. I found this coin with what appears to be a faint 'D' between the dot and the regular mint mark. Could it be an RPM or am I seeing things?







    Any guess as to the Year/Denomination on this one? Let me give you a hint... This was the only "D" mint coin for the series.

    I don't see an RPM but I'm curious what do you use for your photographs? Beautiful pictures.

      Ken - it does appear to be something there, but what is a good guess. What is the year of the coin?

          A repunched mintmark this faint would also be quite thin. The trace here is just as thick as the normal mintmark, which leads me to conclude it's not an RPM.

            Good guess. Your are correct. Since this the 1912-D a semi-key in the Liberty Nickel series, I figured it would either be a well known RPM or not an RPM. I had a feeling it was not an RPM -- but it just looked too much like a 'D' and I had to ask. I thought it might be possible that the "D" punch on the Liberty nickel might be more blunt than those used by Lincoln cents - and therefore leave a wider mark on a light punch. Although the nickel is in VF condition - it does show die deterioration and several fine die cracks. This could be the cause of the apparent raised marks.
