  • Strong bar L on 1915-D

    This 1915-D has a strong bar L.
It's different than the listed DDO die-1 for 1915-D.

I'm puzzled as to if these are DDOs or die wear.
The only one's I find are from well used and worn dies.

    Any thoughts?

Hi Ed - I did an article on this type DDO and it is a bit special. Yes, there are versions that have been found in EDS and also MDS. The reason that I consider it special is that this type of doubling went on for a number of years, up to 1929 and on coins with different mint marks.

My conclusion was that the doubling was caused by a faulty hub collar that improperly seated the working hub. The first tilted impression left the bar under the "L" of LIBERTY and the second, which was created by the increasing presser of the hubbing correctly seating the working hub, for the rest of the impression.

PS - I should mention that you will find different working dies, in the same yaer, with different bars under the L of LIBERTY.
