    Hi Novice,

I thought I would chime in on this one. I just got done looking at rolls of 70-S's and have spent a fair amount of time learning the differences between the large and small date variaties. In no sense am I implying that I'm a professional so anyone correct me if I'm wrong. The Liberty on your coin shows wear not a weak strike. A weak strike will look mushy but with a natural flow of the details into the fields... Kind of soothing or calm actually. You can see the sharp detail of the lettering of yours. On the date there are several features to look for. The first thing I look for is the "tip" on top of the 0. The small date will not have it. If you look at your coin on the 0 of the date at the 12:00 position to the right it slopes down, over, then continues it's normal path. You will also notice that the inside of the 0 almost looks egg shape on the large date. The tops of the numbers 7 & 0 are level on the small date and almost level on the large date (like yours). The diagonal line you point out is on the large date, not the small date. Next and last is the number 9. The point or end of the upper loop comes to a point on the small date and is blunt or almost square on the large date.

Do you have any books that you can refer to for diagnosis? I have several that I constantly refer to and just spend time reading for knowledge. I highly recommend reading the books available. They have a vast amount of information in them.

    Happy Hunting,
    Lestrrr

Edit: I forgot about the reverse. I don't see any doubling there, just wear. The closest would be the top bar of the F in of but the furrow has cut the thickness in half from original. Doubling does not do that. But, I'll leave that portion to the real pros.

There is no doubling and there is no die variety of any sort visible. As others have suggested, use that legitimate 2008 doubled die you discovered as the standard for what you should be looking for.

Oh, and this is the Large Date.
