  • 2006D 2007D 2008P Doubled Ears

    Hi ALL,

These are 3 we think are DOUBLED EARS cents we sent to Dr. Wiles
for verification. Have posted side by side with the known 1997-P Doubled Ear.

To be honest with you, I do not think any of these are doubled ears, except the 1997.

It might be that on some well struck ones the crease and raised area of the lower lobe of the ear shows better.
On some modern cent's you can see a flat area in the hair from not being fully struck and those ones often also lack some of the ear detail.

        Can you clarify please...

        Ed Varietyhunter,
Do you imply that our posted DD ears maybe genuine?

        BJ,
Do you mean you don't see any doubling whatsoever?
Or do you mean they are MDDs?
Is ther any slight probability that they can be genuine? Forgot to note that most if not all the obverse and reverse design elements have some doublings.
And since us 3 NVTEs only did our visual inspections via comparisons to the 1997 DD ear (with no knowledge of the minting process variations that can result to MD; nor die hubbing process that can result to genuine DD Ear),
we only rely on the "nearly" sameness of the images, including their
topographies. What strong/specific characteristics of the 1997 DD ear
you didnot see in our posted coins? That will help use in our future quest.

Eager to know your responses. Thank you!

One thing to remember concerning the 1997 doubled ear. Not only is the ear lobe doubled but other points in the beard as well.

Looking at your pictures, I do not see this doubling and the ears do look normal to me.

            NVTE,

"Do you imply that our posted DD ears maybe genuine?"

I don't think they're doubled dies. I think it's mostly the normal crease and raised area of the lower lobe of the ear shows better on well struck coins.

Look at proofs, they often show the details better and you might only see some of those details that only show on well struck coins from fresh dies. A good example are the inside columns that people often think are doubled when they see a well struck coin but it's the normal design and all proofs show it well.

KPs site has good pics of the 1997, it shows that there is other doubling near the ear.

              Thank you both again.

Can't get a better shots anymore. Have mailed to Dr. Wiles. It is one of the attributes we listed(as ????) together with the other doublings we want him verify from the specific coins.
