CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • Is there any listed Lincoln cent as 6X DD (even minor)

NVTE1 has a coin but still shy to let NVTE2 and NVTE3 look nor photograph,
but would like to first post these questions. He's shy we might brand him as maybe imagining things.

    Thank you. NVTEs

I am not to sure of your nomenclature. I have never heard of 6X DD.

Wouldn't the correct terminology be a sextupled die? I don't remember hearing of any. The most that I've heard of was a quadrupled die. I believe it's on the Coneca website and it was a foriegn coin. That doesn't mean that they don't exist, I'm just saying what I've heard so maybe Mike or BJ have seen one in person. I'd like to see the coin if possible.

        Hi BJ,

Sorry we used wrong terminology. We meant an image that is a genuine
DD replicated to a total of 6 images (example - an image that is tripled and each image show further genuine doubling of serif splits/notches).

        Thank you again, BJ!

          Thanks, too, Lestrrr.

          You're right, sextupled.

No I have never seen more than a tripled die in person.

The most doubling that I have seen is machine doubling with five flats, more than likely caused by harmonic machine doubling.

I know, "What is harmonic machine doubling?"

Since it is impossible for a coin to bounce back and forth from one die to the retreating die, there must be another factor that will make multiple strikes (over two) appear on the coin. Since a coin will resonate when struck it will vibrate at a certain frequency. That is what gives you the sound when a coin is dropped.

Now, think of that coin resonating when it hits the retreating die. The vibrations in the coin will actually step the machine doubling in one hit, giving it the appearance of multiple hits with just one striking of that retreating die. This of course takes place in micro-seconds (or even faster) so it will be hard to prove that this action can or would take place. However, I do feel that this is a plausible answer to machine doubling with over two steps.

Thank you again for this new knowledge.

NVTEs will always apply the rule, when seeing multiple replications (first of all, to not get too excited immediately), but assess first whether DD (with raised image, thickening, notchings/serifs splits) ; or MDD (shelf like flat image).

              Thanks, NVTEs

                Hi Guys,

I need to correct part of the response that I made earlier. The possible sextupled die was on Ken Potters site here: http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/F...71MarrkaDD.htm. It wasn't confirmed though.

Wow! Great coin If that's really sextupled! Thanks for the info!
