CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 2007 Silver Eagle oddity

I posted this over at c-s to see if anyone had seen them, and got no indication that this was known, so I figured I'd try here, as this would be the place for die varieties. (Also, after a lifetime of fascination with error coins, I just submitted my application to join CONECA and the board was pointed at during the process.)

I will try to get some pictures but at the moment, I don't think I have imaging of sufficient magnification to get a good shot of this, so for now a description will have to do.

I picked up a roll of 07 no-W American Silver Eagles a few weeks ago as a matter of speculation on the possibility of rising silver prices, and as is the case with any coin that crosses my path, I got out my loupe and a good light as soon as I had them in hand. I noticed what looked to be the result of a slip with a tool that someone had tried to polish out of the die. I checked the rest of the roll and most of them had the same issue, though there seemed to be different stages of it present through the roll.

Basically there is a raised line (with the finish intact, as opposed to the shiny scratches present on what seems to be a previously roughly-handled roll) going through the top of the second zero in the date, slightly off horizontal and widening on the right. It's quite small and goes through the top of the loop of the zero from a point on the left to a wide end slightly protruding from the other side of the zero. On a couple of them, there appears to be roughness/striations on the inside right hand side of the zero, as if there was an attempt to polish the die.

As said, I've inquired over at c-s, and I wrote to coin world to see if anyone there has seen them or would be interested in taking a look and haven't heard back. Has anyone here heard of this on the 07 ASEs? My description may be a little lacking, please ask for clarification if it's needed.

It sounds like some type of die damage, either a die dent or a die scratch. Since the finish is undisturbed, it might have been inflicted before the final steps of die preparation were completed. I strongly doubt it represents intentional modification or abrasion of the die.

Thank you for your reply. As far as the die scratch goes, I agree, I seriously doubt that would be done intentionally. It's the couple of coins that have the rough spot slightly south of the scratch that make me curious as to whether or not they tried to buff it and the abrasions disappeared as the die was used for strikes. Admittedly, the latter idea is a half-informed one, as some reading I've done leads in that direction but one wouldn't think that type of degradation would be seen in (what I'm assuming is) the same group of coins from a narrow period of time. Until someone with far more experience than I have takes a look I won't really know.

Still working on getting images, things here have been a little hectic the last day or so with layoffs being announced a couple days ago and then being executed this morning. I managed to avoid the axe, but there's a lot of bustling about to get the pieces put together since some key people didn't manage to avoid it.

It is always nice to hear that some made it through the crunch (I suspect that you are AOL connected) and I do feel sorry for those who were let go. Finding a new suitable job is always a hard task unless your career choice is very much in demand. Hopefully, all will smooth out and be back to usual.

        Welcome to the forum.

Thank you for the words of welcome. I hope that I can do my best to become a worthwhile contributor. From the posts I've read here so far it looks like I'll be learning a lot while I'm here. As far as the job stuff, I cannot confirm or deny any company specifics, but yes, eventually it gets back to a point where things are running smoothly again. Such is the nature of business, have to keep things fresh for the sake of the bottom line or some such reasoning, only thing to do is keep one's head down and try to get work done without thinking too much about it.
