CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • Need help with a 1970S question

    Hello,

A few years ago I inherited a number of coins. Several appear to me to be error or die variety. It would be like my dad to collect the more unique coins, especially if he thought they'd be collectible some day. In the coins, one is a 1970S large date with possible doubling and to me, it looks very much like the one pictured in the book about pocket change errors but, I'm really new to this and identifying a mint error from a die variety isn't easy and takes practice. I'm hoping I can get some opinions about what I may have. It does bare a striking resemblance right down to the curved lines in the coin and the impression on the top left of the 9, which are both clear on the coin pictured in the book.

I'm sure the book brought in a new rush of people into the error coin society. I find this really interesting and have been having a lot of fun with it.

I understand that there is no true way to tell from a photo or series of photos but, I'm hoping I can get a general feeling so I know if it's worth sending off for analysis and grading.

Thank you very much. I hope one day to be a help to some of you.

OH, btw, I see more of the doubling with a loup or microscope than in the photographs but, my eye isn't trained. Let me know if the photos need to be retaken and I'll get right on it.

Again, thank you so much for your time and opinions. Even if it's not what I hope, this is a lot of fun, very educational and interesting.

    I'm afraid I don't see any doubling.

        Thank you

I'm heading back to Sacramento from helping my mom out in Northridge. I'll take some more photos when I get home and post them. I have a light box and tripod there and it'll be easier to get the right shot.

Certainly, I'm hoping for something great but, again, I won't be too disappointed if it's not. It's really fascinating to learn the distinctions and various errors that I never even knew were there.

Being really new at this, sometimes I wonder if I'm not seeing what I want to see rather than what's there. LOL.

I see nothing that would lead me to believe that this is a DDO Large Date 1970-S coin.

What I do see though are coin roller damage which pretty much kills the coin.

If you are going to take better closeup pictures, focus in on the 0 in the date as that is where the doubling should be as a secondary 0.
