CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1955 S Lincoln

Just wondering if this 1955 S LMC has some sort of DD on it. Some looks like die chips and other parts in not sure. The part Iam not sure about is the 1 and 5's in the date and part of the IGWT especially the GO of GOD. Thank you for the help.

The first picture in your post shows classic die deterioration doubling, which is evident on the last five digit and the S mint mark. Remember, if both the date and the mint mark show doubling in the same direction, it is more than likely machine doubling or die deterioration doubling.

In the second set of pictures, I see machine doubling on the IGWT, which at times can be mistaken for a doubled die. What I do not see is notching on any of the design elements or extra thickness, which is a sign of a doubled die.

I believe that you have a late state coin that exhibits both machine and die deterioration doubling.

Nice pictures. What did you use for those shots?

I bought one of those little cheap 1.3mp 200x USB digital microscope cameras from ebay.

Ok, I've got one of those too. I just can't get the lighting right enough for the way I like them.

The only thing that intrigues me but is probably the result of the lighting is what appears to be a notch on the lowere left of the digit 1 in the date.

Can you take a few more shots of the date with the coin placed differently each time so that I could get views of the 1 with different lighting?

              Thanks,
              Bill
