  • 68S PR Lincoln Cent...Trail Die?

Would this be a trail die...it is only found on the designer's initials of this 68S PR Lincoln Cent.

    Thanks,
    Larry Nienaber

BJ...could you comment on this post? Would it be a trail die? I found three of these in a group of 68 proof sets.

    Thank You,
    Larry Nienaber

      Hi Larry,
Yes, it does look like a trail die. While the trails do look a bit different on proof coins from other trails dies, I still think ythat the same cause and affect applies.

If possible, I would like to see this one. Please contact me at traildies@aol.com

      Thank you.

        Hi Larry,
I took a long look at this coin and tried to convince myself that it might be a trail die. However, in the end what constitutes a trail die does not match what I see here.

Trails normal start on the ends of design element or any sharp point or edge seen on the working hub. In this case, the lines start in the middle of the design element. I also noticed similar lines, although I believe from a different cause, on LIB of LIBERTY.

If you will also notice that there are lines from the base line of the Memorial building as well that seem to start inwards instead of the point of that design.

I thank you for sending this coin down to me and I will put it up for reference.

BJ's pictures make things a bit more clear. Are the raised areas in the field around the initials pitting on the die or it just a trick of the light that's making them look raised? It almost looks like some of the die abrasion/polishing I've seen but I'm not sure how proof dies were handled in 68 and not sure what type of abrasion would get deep enough into the design elements to show on the lettering. Or is this one just an "it's a mystery" type thing?
