CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    Hi ALL!
    Just for my additional education...

    Can (and How) an imperfectly shaped die (before, during and after)
    hubbing potentially result to DD?

    The above may also relate to (an already) cracked die before hubbing; and
    a die being cracked during the hubbing.

    Pardon if these maybe dumbed questions.

    A doubled die is not the result of a hub defect. It results from a mis-positioning of the working hub or the working die between one squeeze and the next.

    A die can theoretically crack before hubbing, but would likely then be destroyed by the pressure of hubbing. There's really no practical way to determine exactly when a die crack first develops unless you can trace its development through a series of die states or die stages.

      Thanks Mike. Have a follow-up question (may really be dumbed). By the way my question also apply to trail dies.

      Can the 2 instances affect positioning?

          Sorry. What I meant was, if there is an imperfection in the conical shape/planarity of the die (either inherent or caused when cracking occurs)
          will it impact its positioning and or repositioning before/during/after
          hubbing?

            Sure, if the blank face of the working die was machined improperly, it could misdirect the descent of the hub ever so slightly. But this is rank speculation.
