  • 2000 P Sacagawea Eagle

I found this 2000 P sacagawea with what looks like a spear going through the eagle on the back. Is this a variety or an error? Sorry the picture isn't better. It was as close as I could get. Thank you!

This is a die dent or a die gouge that has been nicknamed the "wounded eagle". Actually, there are two parallel, curved die gouges present. One is rather faint. Some folks pay $200 for this particular example of die damage.

Wow thanks! Should I send it in somewhere to get graded? I've never really found anything with an error so I'm not sure what to do with it? Thanks for any advice!

Why would you want to send it to a grading service?

I'm brand new to coin collecting and looking for errors so I guess I'm unsure of the process of what to do when you find an error coin. I just thought when you found an error coin that you send it in to get graded and get documentation about it to either keep it or for if I decide to sell it later. Thanks for your patience with my questions! I've only been coin collecting for about a month.

In my opinion, it would be a waste of money to have it graded. This is a well-known case of die damage and it has not be subject to counterfeiting.
