  • 1995P wide AM

After scoping nearly 15,000 lincolns from bank rolls, I believe I may have found a 1995P wide AM.The obverse is a good strike but he reverse is somewhat weak. The condition of the coin overall may be rated F-VF mostly for detail. there are some circulation stains. the initials have a strong F and a weak G, but not weak enough to avoid identifying the initials favorably.

I have not been able to find popiulation or scarcity information. Will someone please enlighten me, I looked in Vista and Linc cent resources

    many thanks for your interest

There have been no reported WAMs for the year 1995 on the reverse of a Lincoln cent. The separation between the A and the M of AMERICA may be caused by polishing or intentional abrading of that die to a point where the separation appears to be a WAM.

However, if you are confident that it is a new RDV, you should send it to one of the variety experts for verification.

      1955P WAM

Thanks for your advice and prompt response. The space between A & M is about as wide as the widest serif of either the A or M. Moreover, I cannot fully identify the initials although the G does appear to have a lower line going south but debris is surrounding the G so I cannot see it fully

Is there anyone locally (Dallas) you recommend? I would appreciate your emailing me with a name and phone number. Thanks again

The best way to tell if its a wide AM with wear and tear obscuring the area is to make sure the M is centered between the A and E. Close AM's don't always touch and can even have a minor gap between them. The south west corner of the M should be of equal distance from the southeast corner of the A and the north west corner of the E. I had this issue with the 1996 wide AM. I thought I had a hoard of 30 but ended up with just 1 that is legit so far awaiting slabbing. Good luck for sure!

ZAGNUT....much appreciate your effort to identify WAM; however, I have difficulty making any comparison before I checked the penny. Is there a measurement missing from your formula? I cannot see any comparison of the distance between the space of the A and the M (SE and SW) and the distance between A and E. the A and M are both on the south side of the coin tha the A and E are top and bottom of the coin respectively.
It's late and I'm probablly not understnding how this comparisson is done so I will try again after some ZZZZZZZZ. I intend to send the penny to a CONECA inspector before the end of next week.

Since you are in the Dallas area, James Wiles is the person to contact concerning this coin. I believe he is right outside Dallas.

Don't forget the FG (the designer's initials) are different between RDV-006 and 007, so that should be the next area checked on your '95. Here is my comparison illustration of RDV-005, 006 and 007 that might help:

IMHO I would suggest sending it to an attributer such as Wiles, Wexler, Potter or Crawford as opposed to a TPG - if that is what you had in mind. They'll charge much less, do write ups and make it legit quickly, then you'd be able to send it to PCGS as a discovery coin knowing the fees won't be wasted if you are incorrect.
