CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1909 S VDB

I am not as up to date on Varieties as I should be so I will just ask. Is there a known Broken O in God on the 1909 S VDB Lincoln Cent. If there is one then I have number 2, If not then I will have to check with ANACS for certification of a new die variety.

    Robert,

Are you sure your coin is genuine? It has that granular surface that many of the counterfeits coming out of China have.

This coin has a lot of problems. What i see is Double Struck on rusted dies.
I will send it in to ANACS this week end

        1909 S VDB

For this coin to be ligit a sinario like this would have to happen.
Ligatimate Dies would probably have been struck for the 1909 VDB cent and probably retired due to wear and or a broken O in God. In the discard box they rusted up. Then either offically or unofically the dies were recovered the area under the date was cleaned and an S mintmark was applied. At least one coin was double struck with these dies which I have. If I am correct there should be 1909 VDB coins out there with no S but with a broken O in God. This is the only way I can see it happening unless the dies were spirited out of the mint. Thinking more about it I guess the deed would have happened at the Philly mint so I am probably out of luck with my new find.

It would appear the broken 'O' was on the hub rather than the die (assuming it is a genuine coin).

The 1909 S VDB coins are one of the most commonly faked coins , some of the fakes will almost fool anyone.

                      Hello:

My two cents worth. It looks to me that the only way for this "break" in the "O" of God would be for the die to have had debris in the groove of the "O". Remember that the die would have an indentation of the "O" on the surface to shape to "O". IN order to disrupt the recess of the "O" would be to have debris fill up the indentation at the point where your coin shows a break in the "O". Therefore it could be a "one of" or "several of" until the debris is removed.

It really looks like a counterfeit. The letters are not as clean and crisp as they should be on a '09 S VDB cent, or any 1909 Lincoln, for that matter.

I also believe it to a counterfeit. The break in the O would almost have to be hub related, which would mean that may more should be out there. As for debris in the recess of the O on the working die causing the missing arc in the O, it seems to sharply defined for a partially clogged die.

I just finished an entry for the 1909 Lincoln cent on error-ref.com. For those interested, here it is

I just did a little research by going back through some of the archives on some other coin related forums. The Broken "O" of GOD is a diagnostic of one of the many fakes out there. The S (mint mark) also has very pronounced and phony looking serifs. The S has a very unusual shape as well.

The coin is indeed a forgery and actually a fairly obvious one at that now that the diagnostics are known.

                            Thanks,
                            Bill
