1968-D 50c DDO Find!!
I was going to my friend's corner store and she told me she had some silver coins for me.this coin I was going to rejecy but I kept it any way. Got home and checked it out and it turned out to be a doubled die. That made my day.I believe it to be 1-O-VI (D, S) Im not too sure.If someone could help me out I'll be grateful. Thanks!!Still the best "Nickel Trail Die Hunter". 2013 ((MIKEE)) T.DavisTags: None

I can say that it is a doubled die (actually a tripled die). However, since both the 1 and 2 dies look similar to each other, I cannot say which one it is.
Very nice find and the 2 die is listed in the CPG.

BJ, I was looking at Coneca's listings for this DDO,and I believe it to be 2-O-II-C (3); FS-50-1968D-101
Description:
Light triple spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, date, and Y of LIBERTY
There is only 2 listings for a triple like doubled die and the spread extending to the Y in LIBERTY.If this isnt the DDO then we are talking about a whole new die here!
Also I've add a photo of the only clear notching I can see in the date!Attached FilesStill the best "Nickel Trail Die Hunter". 2013 ((MIKEE)) T.Davis

I think the 68D DDO’s are one of the hardest in the Kennedy series to attribute. Did you notice that the 68D DDO-003 also has some tripling, 3-O-II-C (3). What we need are some good markers in the listings. I can tell you a couple markers for the 68D DDO-001, Stage B, besides the high mint mark, would be a die gouge to the right and a die gouge dot below the last A in AMERICA (see attached photo)...James has confirmed this DDO-00l I have. Does anyone have a confirmed -002 or -003 that they can share some markers?

I have to doubt your conclusion using the die gouge dots around the U of TRUST to attribute your half dollar as the 68D DDO-002...It doesn’t look to me that they match Tim’s. I compared several die scratches from Tim’s DDO-002 photos with my DDO-002 and they match. Maybe these would be good markers: the die scratch south from the bottom of the E in WE, the die scratches north from the R of TRUST, and the die scratch east from the bottom of the Y in LIBERTY. If you compare the bottom serif of the S in TRUST you can see some separation on the tip of yours, but there is none on the 002. I don’t think you have a DDO-002.

Die markers can be tricky. The weaker they are the less they are to be trusted. I have studied the 1960-D small date Lincoln cent for over three years now and can testify that die makers are constantly changing. This one particular dated series proves that.
So, while strong die makers can be trusted (die chips, cracks or any other anomaly that is continues), weak die markers tend to change over an allotted strike period. Do not base conclusions on weak die markers.

When it comes to properly attributing varieties of the Kennedy half dollar series, I would listen to Larry. Larry has probably forgotten more about markers on the different stages of varieties within this one series (Kennedy Half Dollars) then most of us will figure out.
To illustrate the above point, you need not look any further then the 1970-D DDR-005 in the Kennedy Series. Based on markers, Larry was able to show that the coin listed as the DDR-005 was only a die stage of the 1970-D DDR-002. James Wiles concurred and you will notice that the 70-D DDR-005 is currently unlisted in the CONECA files.
I’m not sure what point wavysteps is trying to make. Yes, some faint or weaker die markers may only show up on certain die stage, but if it is an established marker for that stage then why not use it.
