  • 1978-D Dime DDO? May be my first find!

I had been studying this dime for about a week. I had to look at it a couple of times every night when I got home from work. I could not find any listings anywhere for a 1978-D 10c DDO. I did find this one that sold for $27 on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/DOUBLEDDIE-1...-/170866311111. I always check this forum about once a week to see what is new. What did my surprised eyes see Yesterday? Mr. Davis' (coin crazy's) post about the 1978-P dime. Mine looks very similar to his even though they are from 2 different mints and very similar to the one that sold on ebay. I hope the pics are not too blurry. I had to hold a flashlight, and try to take a pic through my loupe. PLEASE tell me I have finally found something.

    Sorry.

Sorry. I put this in the wrong forum. I do not know how to move it.

Hi Jay - Happy New Year.

From the images that you have provided, it does not look like a doubled die. Then again, they are a bit blurred so finer details that may show hub doubling are not detectable.

Looking at you reference on E-bay, that also is not a doubled die, even though it is so stated. Many auctions that claim to be hub doubling on E-bay are actual forms of machine doubling. Be wary of auctions that do not provide a referencing listing number for that particular doubled die. Also, it is wise to check the CONECA master listings for doubled dies in a certain year/denomination to see if any are within that year. In this case, there are no 1978-D or 1978-P Roosevelt dimes with doubled dies listed.

        Thanks

Thanks BJ. I never trust ebay listings, however the letters just look really distorted. It looks like the 78-P coin crazy put up. I can't find any splits, the letters just look wrong. Looks like someone paid $27 dollars for a $0.10 dime. Thanks again. You guys are great. Happy New Year. Maybe I'll find something this year.

Class VI extra thickness is tricky. You have to compare any given year to an example from that same year. What coin-crazy posted strikes me as the kind of extra thickness and distortion I would expect to see, but I have no reference shots to compare it to. Yours might as well, but as BJ noted, the shots are too blurry to be certain.

And that example on ebay does not strike me as being a doubled die either.

            Thanks

Thanks for the input Jason. I think I will just put it back and when I run into another one I will compare the two. If there is a drastic difference I will look into getting it verified.
