  • Help with a 1965 Kennedy Half DDO

Hello everyone! I recently found what I believe to be a 1965 SMS DDO Kennedy Half. I'd like some help attributing it, as it's not listed in the CPG and I can't find pictures in CONECA's listings...so expert opinion is needed!

I'll also include photos of the entire coin. Doubling is readily seen on TRUST, the 965 of the date, and the last half of LIBERTY. I believe I added the photos in which I've added arrows to help out...

    Thank you!

Okay - it is a doubled die, that is for sure. I believe it may be die # 2 in the CONECA master files, but I cannot be sure. More than likely, it will take an in hand examination to determine which die it is.

Thanks for the opinion, wavysteps. I was thinking it was the DDO-002 as well just due to the description (it fit my coin the best.) I'm supposed to get my copy of Wexler's Treasure Hunting Franklin and Kennedy Double Dies today or tomorrow...I'm hoping there will be some extra info there...

Any idea as to the rarity? At the grade mine is (probably a 65-66), I'm wondering if I have a possible top/pop for the variety...

      Thanks!

I'm thinking that the DDO-003 is a possibility as well...

My opinion...your 65 DDO would be a minor variety. I say that because over the years I have sent similar 65 SMS half dollars to James Wiles (CONECA) and they have come back as “too minor”. I don’t think your half dollar matches anything in the CONECA Master Listings, including the 65 DDO-002. Attached is a photo of the 65 SMS DDO-002.

There are some very good die gouge markers for the 65 SMS DDO-003...I don't see any of them in your photos.
