CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1964 Kennedy PROOF. Accent Hair. major DDO please advise

Hello. My name is Chris. I would say that my favorite coin, (also the coin I am most familiar with) is the 1964 Kennedy half. I am especially fanatical of the Accented Hair proofs. So, I have several Accent Hairs that I have set aside, or graded as DDO, DDR's. I am getting the exact variety out of the Cherry pickers guide, NGC's variety attribution, and also PCGS's population report on 1964 AH Kens with DDO's, or DDR's. The DDO's for AH's listed in the CPG, NGC, and PCGS are very easy to attribute, with any experience and a trained eye. So I have 2 Accented Hairs that are both EXTREMELY good DDO's but ABSOLUTELY NOT IN THE CPG, OR RECOGNIZED BY NGC, OR PCGS. That usually wouldn't mean anything, as there are probably 10-20 very minor varieties, just for 1964 Kennedy proofs alone that are not listed/recognized/etc because they are so minor and insignificant... Here is some perspective, for any of you who know anything about the 1964 Kennedy varieties, proofs for instance, the regular 1964 Ken proof DDO that is strongest, and most desirable (according to CPG, and NGC) is the FS-101, or DDO-002. These two AH's I have that I am talking about, are very similar, if not the same Doubling as the regular kennedy proof just mentioned. So, Im wondering if anyone can give any insight on where a guy like me could go to report this variety, and possibly get it "discovered" and recognized by anyone, goal being the TPG's... any advice would be awesome. I know that there are a billion varieties, and that it wouldn't be feesable to list them or acknowledge them all, but this one is as strongly doubled as the one that is supposedly "the best, and most desired" but yet there isn't anything about it anywhere.... so I would like to look into to sharing it with the numiscommunity, and eventually having it possible to attribute with NGC/PCGS!!!

Thanks. -PS. I will do my best to get pics, it is very difficult for me as I do not have professional photo equip, and plus the coins are both newly slabbed, which makes pictures of proofs even more impossibly. but again, the doubling is almost identical to the FS-101, or DDO-002, only mine are Accented Hairs, whereas that one is just the normal kennedy. I have one of those too, Ill try to post pics of it as well, for comparison.

    Thank you in advance.

    Chris.

Thank you very much Larry. Man, there are a lot more minor varieties than I ever imagined. I counted 11 AH DDO's on that list there. I am curious, are there good photos of all or any of these varieties anywhere else besides CPG, NGC, PCGS? I cant be sure about which one I have based on a description of the doubling. I would really like to attempt to attribute it myself and put this to rest in my mind. As unlikely as it being undiscovered it really is, I just want to make sure as one of my goals is to "discover" a relevant variety. I am perplexed as to why it isn't one that is recognized by NGC, PCGS, or even noted in the CPG's. It is as good or better (in terms of strength of doubling) than ANY of the other DDO's for the 1964 Kennedy proof half dollar. Id be comfortable saying that the only one with stronger doubling is the FS-103, where the doubling is on "liberty" and can be seen with the naked eye. Anyways, thanks again. I appreciate the insight.

You can send your half dollars to CONECA, Mike Ellis or James Wiles for an attribution, or post some photos and maybe someone can help you.
