1935 Lincoln Cents - heavy die scratches NORMAL or NOT

While checking this coin I noticed there were heavy die scratches and was this normal or are they Die Markers for a New Breed? THX Ed

A lot of times, those heavy scratches are from where they polished away a die clash.

Feeder Fingers had nothing to do with the die scratches in this case. The most likely cause was mentioned as cleaning up a die to lessen the effect of a die clash.

I was not replying to you or mentioning your wheat cent. the 1995 cent is the coin with the feeder finger damage. there is a big difference between feeder finger die scratches and die polish scratches.

I didn't see the 1995 cent which does indeed show the effects of a die having been damaged by a feeder finger.

The first 2 pics appear to show a die clash. The marks running through the E of ONE and the C of Cent. Check out this link, scroll down to the wheat cent overlays, and look at the pic on the right. It is an overlay of the reverse.

We haven't got to defining die scratches yet, but die scratches tend to be finer lines seen on coins and are mostly the result of abrading the die to remove unwanted marks from the die.
