    Tripled Die Gem

Bought a 1934D Oregon Trail Commemorative off a friend of mine and this is what I found once I had it in hand. Enjoy.

This same tripling can be found on the 33D Oregon Trail as well as is even noted in the CPG that it can found on the 34D.

The coin was sent to Wiles and is on its way back to me so he can better say what it is as I have not communicated with him about his findings yet.

Any chance this could be a doubled die with machine doubling also? There appears to be some notching. Probably not. Rascal is one you can trust for sure. Just throwing it out there.

I was typing while you were jaceravone. Please let us know what James says. Beautiful and interesting coin you have there!

with doubling this minor it is hard to say for sure from just looking at photos. It helps to attribute a minor doubled die if there is other coins from the same die to compare it to. Wiles will know if other coins like this have been found. sometimes the real doubled die coins can mimmic the mechanical doubling really close and it's hard to tell them apart unless it is a known example.

            Reply from James,

            Joseph:
It is definitely a tripled die. Just check the splits in the serifs of HALF.
            Thanks,
            James Wiles

Thanks guys. Finding errors is fun....but cherrypicking them off of friends is more fun! The guy that I got this off of doesn't know about this yet. Unfortunately, there isn't much value to these above and beyond what a normal one would carry. Dr. Wiles told me that they are common for the variety, but because there were such a small mintage that they are uncommon. Basically they are hard to find, but not really. LOL! Just when I thought I struck it rich!

Nice find Joe , that's why I joined CONECA a couple months ago . I have trouble telling die doubling from md . Thanks for sharing this beauty . I also heard you say there is a 4 page article in the Errorscope that tells how to tell the 2 apart , but can't find it . What was the articles name and author so I can look it up .
