CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

  • Mint Single Sqeeze Hubbing

I thought the 'Single Squeeze Hubbing' article featured in the Sep/Oct 07 issue of Errorscope written by BJ Neff was an eye opener.

According to the excerpt from the Mint printed on page 5, "The new process has been used for master dies and work hubs and is in pilot testing for production dies".

I am curious, has the mint ever re-stated their position on this? (I understand this excerpt was taken from the FY86 mint report). That has been some time ago. If so, I'd be interested to hear.

"Pilot Testing", to me at least, allows them wiggle room to be flexible and make other choices......

    Thanks,

I believe that the only other "statement" made by the MINT concerning single squeeze hubbing was when they opened the die shop in the Denver MINT, stating that by 1997 all dies for the cent, nickel, dime and quarter would be made from this process at both MINTs. This was later followed by a 1999 date for the half dollar and the dollar dies to be made by this system.

Other than that, they have been pretty much closed mouth about the system, citing concerns regarding counterfeiting and the secrecy involved. Can't blame them on that.

      Interesting then,

      Thanks BJ.

One other question. I am curious, has it been been cited, suggested, or speculated as to the Mint taking any 'known action' or other active counter-measures in an effort to polish down working dies to eliminate, or hide the effects of Wavy Steps?

Reason I ask is I searched several bag's of 99 Lincolns a long time gone now. I had found an assortment of coins indicating the steps of the Memorial being largely eliminated. I remember polish or abrasion marks mostly. I thought it odd as none appeared as having been 'struck thru' in ways we are most familar. (I may have some of them around still, in numis tubes).

      Thanks,

      Jeff

To be honest with you Jeff, I think that the MINT has little concern with either wavy steps or trails (which the call die markers????) from the last letter received concerning these anomalies.

I had suspected their lack of interest when in 1999, they left the strongest wavy step die known to date and changed out the obverse die due to a die clash. Stage "C" of 1999P-1DER-015WS has a reverse at LDS while the obverse is EDS.

Actually, I am happy that the MINT does not want to investigate the cause for trails and wavy steps, just gives us more to look for. And I am sure that there will be more.
