A Clashed Die variety occurs when a planchet fails to enter into the coining chamber but the press cycles anyway. The dies may then smash or clash into each other leaving being their impressions into one or both of the opposing dies to a greater or lesser degree.

Monster Clashed Dies 1944 Merc Dime BU
Shown here are nice Clashed Dies on a 1944 Winged Liberty (Mercury) dime from Jeffrey Schmittler. He submitted it at the Michigan State Numismatic Society Convention Spring 2011.
